The Synod Authorized Ministers (SAM) Development Training Program at LSTC equips lay leaders authorized by ELCA synods to serve in pastoral roles through a fully online, asynchronous curriculum.

As a facilitator, you play a vital role in guiding a cohort of learners through this program by offering pastoral support, contextual insight, and community-building—not as a grader, but as a formational companion.

Facilitators are provided with a full set of video guides that offer an overview of the program

Each compentency unit includes 4-6 modules (24 modules total), with learners engaging over 8-12 weeks per resource depending on the unit. Your presence helps learners connect theological content to real-life ministry and stay grounded in their call.

The program is designed to be flexible, relational, and accessible—offering both structure and room for synod-specific adaptation.

The SAM Development Training Program is an asynchronous, certificate-based training resource designed to equip Synod Authorized Ministers (SAMs) with the theological, contextual, and leadership competencies necessary for effective ministry in local congregations. Developed by LSTC faculty and aligned with the ELCA’s identified competency areas, this program provides flexible, high-quality content that supports synods in the formation of lay leaders. Learners engage in modules rooted in real-world ministry, cultural awareness, biblical and theological reflection, and pastoral practice, preparing them for meaningful leadership in diverse and emerging ministry contexts. The program is designed to be facilitated in cohort settings or completed individually, depending on synod needs.

Bishop authorization is required for learners to participate in this program.
